Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month: Introducing the Mouth Mirror Challenge for Early Detection

Every year, April is observed as Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month, a global initiative aimed at increasing awareness about oral cancer, throat cancer, and other head & neck cancers.
One of the biggest challenges in treating these cancers is late detection. Many patients ignore early symptoms, assuming they are minor issues like mouth ulcers or infections — often delaying diagnosis until the disease has progressed.
At i-BOCC Care, we believe that awareness can save lives.
This year, we are launching a simple yet powerful campaign:
The Mouth Mirror Challenge
A habit that takes just 30 seconds a month, but can help detect early signs of oral cancer.
Why the Mouth Mirror Challenge Matters
Oral cancer is often visible in its early stages — if you know what to look for.
Early detection can lead to:
- Smaller, less invasive treatments
- Better functional outcomes (speech, swallowing)
- Faster recovery
- Higher chances of cure
However, most people do not regularly check their mouth.
The Mouth Mirror Challenge aims to change that.
What Is the Mouth Mirror Challenge?
The concept is simple:
- Take 30 seconds once a month
- Use a mirror and proper lighting
- Perform a self-examination of your mouth
- Stay alert to any unusual changes
This small step can make a big difference in early diagnosis.
How to Perform a Self Mouth Examination (Step-by-Step)
You don’t need any special equipment — just a mirror and awareness.
Step 1: Look at Your Lips
- Check for cracks, sores, or colour changes
- Look for any non-healing lesions
Step 2: Check the Inside of Your Cheeks
- Pull your cheeks outward
- Look for white patches, red patches, or ulcers
Step 3: Examine Your Tongue
- Stick your tongue out
- Check the top, sides, and underside
- Look for lumps, patches, or unusual textures
Step 4: Check the Floor of Your Mouth
- Lift your tongue upward
- Look for swelling, ulcers, or discolouration
Step 5: Inspect the Roof of Your Mouth
- Tilt your head back
- Look for any abnormal growths or patches
Step 6: Check Mouth Opening
- Try opening your mouth fully
- Notice if there is pain, stiffness, or restriction
Step 7: Feel for Any Lumps
- Gently feel your neck and jawline
- Check for any unusual swelling or lumps
Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
If you notice any of the following symptoms for more than 2–3 weeks, consult a specialist:
- Non-healing mouth ulcer
- White or red patches
- Persistent pain or burning sensation
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Unexplained bleeding
- Lump in the mouth or neck
