Risk Factors
There is no single cause for breast cancer. It usually happens because of a mix of factors that push the cells into a spiral of uncontrolled increase in number and misbehave.
Risk factors include:
- Being a woman.
- Growing older – breast cancer is essentially a disease of aging women.
- Not having children or late first pregnancy.
- Lack of breastfeeding.
- Lifestyle factors – obesity, lack of exercise, alcohol use, smoking, and unhealthy diet.
- Hormonal factors – periods starting very early, late menopause.
- Family history – if a mother, sister, or close blood relative has had either breast, ovarian or prostate cancer, the risk could be higher.
- Genetic causes – inherited changes in genes (like BRCA1/2), though these are less common.
Having one or more of these risk factors does not mean a woman will definitely get breast cancer, but it does increase her chances. Many women with no risk factors can still get breast cancer, which is why awareness, regular self-examination, and timely medical check-ups are so important.
Signs & Symptoms
When a lady finds any change in the look or feel of her breasts, she should consult a breast specialist. The easiest way to do so is a regular breast self-examination.
